Meet The Facekini, China’s Strange Looking Summer Beach Trend

Sharing is Caring

Hop aboard the train from Beijing and reach out to Qingdao, the largest city of Shandong Province. Its claims to fame include lovely beaches, tasty Tsingtao beer, and the infamous “facekini”. Its cover your head without nose, mouth and eyeholes. “facekini” was invented more than ten years ago by local entrepreneur and it takes global curiosity.

In east Asia, a pale complexion is a beauty ideal. After the industrial revolution, skin tone became a class marker. These days, Chinese women try to survive from the sun. They used to carry UV blocking umbrellas or wear mirrored visors that slope down over the face. The facekini is not a trend in Qingdao; it is a way of life for many people.
